Alexander Zverev has underlined that is “very hungry to win” and that’s the main reason why he believes he will be the one winning the Diriyah Tennis Cup. Zverev, 25, hasn’t played since early June. During his French Open semifinal match versus Rafael Nadal, Zverev tore several ankle ligaments.
In September – just when Zverev was preparing to return – the German sustained a bone edema. Between 08-10 December, Zverev will be competing at the Diriyah Tennis Cup in Riyadh. The Diriyah Tennis Cup is set to feature some of the biggest names of the game as Daniil Medvedev, Nick Kyrgios and Stefanos Tsitsipas are also expected to play.
“I haven’t played in seven months, and I’m the hungriest out of all of them,” Zverev told the Diriyah Tennis Cup, when asked why he can win the tournament.
Did someone say rapid-fire questions?😁 It‘s the turn now for @AlexZverev, @DaniilMedwed, @Taylor_Fritz97 and @cam_norrie 🔥⁉️#DiriyahTennisCup #DiriyahSeason #DTC #SaudiArabia #Aramco pic.twitter.com/RIXeBpmqcp — Diriyah Tennis Cup (@DiriyahCup) November 30, 2022
Zverev ready for competitive action
Six months ago, Zverev was just two wins away from winning his first Grand Slam title at the French Open.
Then, he sustained a horror injury against Nadal. Reflecting on the injury, Zverev underlined injuries are a part of the game and there was nothing to be mad about. “I broke seven ligaments and needed surgery. You have to accept those setbacks and live with them.
It happened during the Roland Garros semi-final, with me trying to achieve a lifetime goal. It did not occur while snowboarding or skiing; it was not a stupid accident. I realized what life without tennis is like for the first time, and I appreciate my job and career even more.
I miss traveling and competing; hopefully, I’m ready for something big and new. I was still in the ATP Race to Turin a few weeks before the event, indicating a good season. Rafa and I played on a very high level in Paris, with both at the absolute limit,” Zverev said. It remains to be seen how will Zverev’s return in Riyadh go.
