Jeff Saturday’s brief tenure in charge of the Colts has already seen Indianapolis drop three nationally-televised games. If the Colts don’t tighten up, that record could quite easily turn to four on Monday.
Indianapolis’ woeful campaign his a new low last week, when the Colts saw a 33-0 lead evaporate en route to an overtime loss to the Vikings.
The offense was putrid, the defense tattered. Now, they’ve turned to a new QB, their third of the season: Nick Foles.
If Indy fans thought a reprieve was coming, they might want to think again: Justin Herbert and the Chargers are headed to town.
It hasn’t been the easiest of seasons for the Bolts. Keenan Allen, Joey Bosa, Austin Ekeler and Mike Williams all spent some time on the sideline, depriving Los Angeles of some of its biggest stars. In that environment, Herbert struggled a bit.
But as the lineup has returned to strength, so too has Herbert. The third-year hurler isn’t quite on pace for the gaudy numbers he put up in his rookie and sophomore campaigns, throwing for seven touchdowns to just one interception in four games prior to last week’s messy clash with the Titans.
Even when Herbert struggled (as was the case against Tennessee), it seemed Los Angeles had enough in the tank to keep trekking along. Ekeler averaged nearly five yards a pop last week, finding pay dirt with a crucial score in the fourth quarter. And although the defense couldn’t quite stop Derrick Henry, it did just enough to blight the Titans’ other weapons.
All that amounted to a 17-14 win for the Chargers in Week 15, a result that pushes them ever so closer to a playoff spot. After the debacle that occurred at the end of the last season, you can’t imagine there are many better ways to wash out the bitter taste of a 9-8 year than a playoff push.
Things could get dicey for Saturday and company, especially after such a soul-crushing defeat. With a hungry Los Angeles team on the prowl, that could prove a very imposing threat.
