Projected Starting Goaltenders
No goaltenders are confirmed unless otherwise stated. Projections are based on factors like rest, venue, opponent and upcoming games. Projected starters underlined.
- Calgary – I’m assuming the Flames’ starter is going to Jacob Markstrom, for now, but Dan Vladar earned himself another start.
- Dallas – For now, I’m expecting Jake Oettinger to start, but backup Scott Wedgewood hasn’t started since Jan. 4th. Dallas does have a back-to-back situation coming up next week, though.
- Pittsburgh – Dustin Tokarski was in goal for the Penguins on Friday. Casey DeSmith is expected to start on Saturday.
- Carolina – Frederik Andersen made his first start since Nov. 6th against Columbus on Thursday, but this is the first half of a back-to-back for the Hurricanes and that makes it tough to predict which goaltender will start which game.
- Philadelphia – Carter Hart has had a light workload (three games played since the holidays) and there’s no reason to think he won’t be in goal for the Flyers in Washington.
- Washington – Darcy Kuemper didn’t help the Capitals win in Philadelphia, so it’s tough to tell if they’ll turn to Charlie Lindgren or not. He hasn’t started since Jan. 6th.
- Toronto – Ilya Samsonov has a win over Boston this season, but the Maple Leafs could turn to Matt Murray this time around.
- Boston – Linus Ullmark is the guy.
- Vancouver – Thatcher Demko isn’t game ready, according to reports, and the Canucks play the Hurricanes on Sunday. Collin Delia today, Spencer Martin tomorrow?
- Florida – Spencer Knight is out with an injury so expect Sergei Bobrovsky to start in goal.
- Ottawa – Cam Talbot has been off since Jan. 9th.
- Colorado – Alexandar Georgiev has had three days off. Pavel Francouz played on Jan. 12th.
- Columbus – It’s a toss-up between Elvis Merzlikins and Joonas Korpisalo.
- Detroit – Ville Husso will start in goal for the Red Wings.
- Montreal –Samuel Montembeault will start for the Canadiens.
- Islanders – Semyon Varlamov hasn’t started since Jan. 6th.
- Seattle – Martin Jones has been between the pipes for most of Seattle’s recent wins, and this seems like a good game to try and get Philipp Grubauer a start, even if it does hurt their chances of winning.
- Chicago – Alex Stalock is listed as day-to-day. Expect Petr Mrazek to start in goal.
- Tampa Bay – Let’s go with Andrei Vasilevskiy, for now, but I wouldn’t rule out a Brian Elliott start.
- St. Louis – No goaltender has started more games than Jordan Binnington. Maybe that’s why he’s so angry. Thomas Greiss will get some more starts down the stretch, but I’ll assume they rely on their starter with the Lightning in town.
- Arizona – Karel Vejmelka has started 30 games. The Coyotes are in Winnipeg on Sunday.
- Minnesota – This is a good spot for Marc-Andre Fleury to get a start.
- Buffalo – Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen had his win streak snapped in Winnipeg and I’m assuming the Sabres will give him a chance to start a new one.
- Nashville – Juuse Saros is expected to be back in goal for the Preds.
- Edmonton – Jack Campbell only faced 26 shots on Friday and Calvin Picard is the only other option.
- Vegas – Logan Thompson is expected to start.
- New Jersey – MacKenzie Blackwood is expected to start.
- Los Angeles – I guess it’s Pheonix Copley’s net now.
Injury Updates

- Carolina – Max Pacioretty and Jordan Staal were not on the ice this morning and their status for Saturday is up in the air.
- Dallas – Roope Hintz is regarded as day-to-day.
- Chicago – Patrick Kane is expected to return to the Blackhawks’ lineup after missing three games.
- Pittsburgh – Kris Letang and Jeff Petry are expected to remain out.
- Toronto – Auston Matthews is dealing with an illness, in addition to his injury, and his status is up in the air. However, just to be safe, I’m assuming that he will be in the lineup on Saturday, as beating the Bruins is a top priority.
- Vegas – Mark Stone is out.
- Los Angeles – Viktor Arvidsson is listed day-to-day with an illness.
