Tyquan Thornton rose to the occasion Thursday night.
In a tremendously speedy group of wide receivers at the NFL Combine, the Baylor product stood out. Ohio State’s Chris Olave set the bar in the 40-yard dash with a blazing 4.39 seconds; Thornton cleared it with relative ease:

Thornton’s blazing speed should raise his draft stock. With the speed-hungry NFL always looking for faster downfield threats, Thornton’s breakout 2021 season at Baylor and solid testing at the combine may provide a springboard for a better landing spot in the draft.
Originally notched as an 4.21 seconds, Thornton’s official time was 4.28, good for sixth-fastest at the Combine since 2003.
But Thornton’s speed isn’t a new or surprising thing. Here’s why:
Who is Tyquan Thornton?
Thornton is a wide receiver who played in 42 games over four years at Baylor, catching 19 touchdowns in that span. As a senior, he had something of breakout year, scoring 10 touchdowns on 948 receiving yards.
You are watching what could be the new 40-yard dash record at the combine (4.21u).

The speed isn’t new: Thornton was a dual-sport athlete in high school. He ran a 10.50 in the 100-meter dash and a 21.07 in the 200 meters, according to the Dallas Morning News.
Thornton told NFL Network’s Stacey Dales that his goal at the combine was to hit that 4.21 mark. He was just seven one-hundredths short of it.Â
At the next level, Thornton is expected to be a deep threat. His 40 time certainly helps his case: Prior to the combine, Thornton was projected to go around the fourth round in the 2022 NFL Draft. While some still believe he may be selected on Day 3, a late Day 2 pick may also be in the cards.
NFL Combine 40-yard dash record
John Ross set the record for fastest 40-yard dash time in 2017 with a 4.22. The time did help his draft stock, as he landed with the Bengals as the No. 9 overall pick in that year’s draft.Â
In his first (and only) run at the 2022 NFL Combine, Thornton set an unofficial record with a 4.21-second 40-yard dash. The record ultimately was not broken with the official time recorded as 4.28.
While it didn’t come to pass, Ross was very inviting Thursday of the idea of Thornton breaking his record:
Yall crazy to think id be mad over him breaking it im happy for bro lol honestly that’s 🔥 fr!!
