Former NASCAR driver and Fort Kent native Austin Theriault has announced that he will be running for a spot in Maine’s Legislature.
Theriault, who is currently mentoring teenage racing phenomenon Carson Brown, announced his campaign on Saturday at the Can-Am Crown sled dog races.
Theriault’s bid for state District 1, which includes the communities of Allagash, Fort Kent, New Canada, Saint Francis, St. John Plantation, Eagle Lake, Winterville Plantation, Wallagrass, Portage Lake, Ashland, Masardis, Garfield Plantation, Nashville Plantation and Clayton Lake township, comes out of concern over recent political issues.
“I hear it every day, concerned Mainers wanting to bring common sense to Augusta,” Theriault said. “It has been building for a while, but recent events have made it painfully clear that some misguided policies are making life unaffordable for the average Aroostook County family.
Theriault, a graduate of Fort Kent Community High School, has driven for NASCAR and also owns small businesses in Maine and North Carolina that specialize in helping drivers develop their skills and driver management.
“I am confident that we can work together to get Maine back on track and strengthen Aroostook County so that my parents and grandparents can rest assured that the community will be a flourishing place for the next generation,” Theriault said.
