The world of sport is capable of transmitting important messages and has decided to openly take sides against the war in Ukraine. The consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could become increasingly heavy for Russian athletes around the world.
The Champions League final will no longer be held in St. Petersburg but in Paris; the Formula 1 Grand Prix and the Ski World Cup have been canceled; the International Olympic Committee withdrew the Olympic Order from the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin.
“The IOC EB, based on the exceptional circumstances of the situation and considering the very serious violation of the Olympic Truce and other violations of the Olympic Charter by the Russian government in the past, made the ad hoc decision to withdraw the Olympic Order to all people who currently perform an important function in the government of the Russian Federation or in other high-ranking government-related positions.
These include: Mr Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation (Gold, 2001) Mr Dmitry Chernyshenko, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation (Gold, 2014) Mr Dmitry Kozak, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office (Gold, 2014 ) The IOC, however, has decided not only to punish Putin and to use a hard fist.”
Medvedev and other Russian tennis players in trouble?
The IOC would like to extend the severe punishment to Russian athletes competing in the world of sports as well. As for tennis, specifically, Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, Aslan Karstev, Karen Khachanov and all the other Russian and Belarusian players are at risk of a forced break.
The Executive of the International Olympic Committee has in fact recommended banning Russian and Belarusian athletes from all international sporting events or forcing them to compete as neutral athletes. “International Sports Federations and organizers of sporting events do not invite or allow the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials in international competitions,” the statement read.
We will see the position that the ATP will take after the statement published by the IOC. Meanwhile Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as reported by Kyiv Independen, said: “A disaster at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant would be 6 times worse than Chernobyl.
It could have been the end of the history of Ukraine and Europe. How is that possible. We fought the aftermath of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster together. Have you forgotten that? If you remember it, you cannot be silent. Tell your leaders you want to live. ”
