KING — The West Stokes boys’ tennis team is off to a 5-0 start, including a 6-3 victory over Mount Airy and conference sweeps over Reidsville (6-0) and Morehead (9-0).
Against the Bears, the Wildcats won five of the six individual matches. Matt Allen, seeded No. 2, beat Carson Hill 6-2, 6-4, and No. 3 Jayden Baughman won over John Juno, 6-3, 6-4.
No. 4 seed James Spainhour overcame Conner Sechrist in a two-set tie breaker 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). In the final two individual matches, Peyton Spainhour (No. 5) won 7-5, 6-4 against Kieran Slate, and Todd Mendenhall beat Martin Cooker, 6-2, 6-1.
West’s No. 1 seed, Sammie Heath, lost 6-0, 6-0 to the Bears’ Georgie Kriek.
In the three double matches, Allen and Baughman teamed together to beat Juno and Slate 6-3. Heath and James Spainhour lost to Kriek and Juno 8-3 while Peyton Spainhour and Mendenhall fell to Sechrist and Cooke 6-3.
In the Wildcats’ Mid-State 2A Conference matches against Reidsville and Morehead, Heath, Allen, Baughman, James Spainhour, Peyton Spainhour and Mendenhall all secured individual wins.
West Stokes (5-0, 2-0) hosted Walkertown (1-1) on Tuesday (no score reported) and its next match will be against non-conference opponent North Surry (0-5). The Wildcats beat the Greyhounds 9-0 on March 10.
