JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. (March 18, 2022) – The first action of the Spring season for the No. 22 Denison University men’s golf team saw the Big Red finish day one of the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational in a tie for 14th place out of 30 total teams at the Jekyll Island Golf Club.
Denison shot a team score of 291 (+3) during round one on Friday and is 12 strokes off the lead. Tied with the Big Red is Southwestern University.
All five Denison players shot in the 70’s on Friday, led by Davis Johnson with a two-under-par round of 70. Johnson is tied for 13th place in the field of 150 golfers.
Marc Mitchell is tied for 38th after shooting an even-par of 72 and Andrew Gallagher is tied for 49th with a one-over par score of 73.
Lastly, Sam Davis and Ben Scherman are both at four-over-par (76), which puts them into a tie for 95th.
Hosted by No. 12 Oglethorpe University, the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational is a three day 54-hole event with one of the largest and most competitive fields in NCAA Division III golf.
In addition to the No. 22 Big Red and No. 12 Oglethorpe, other nationally-ranked teams in the field include No. 1 Emory, No. 2 Methodist, No. 3 Huntingdon, No. 6 Carnegie Mellon, No. 7 Illinois Wesleyan, No. 8 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, No. 9 Christopher Newport, No. 10 Greensboro, No. 11 Piedmont, No. 14 Washington & Lee, No. 16 Sewanee, No. 20 New York University, No. 21 Hampden-Sydney and No. 25 Redlands.
Round two from Jekyll Island is set for Saturday, March 19, followed by round three on Sunday, March 20.
