Soccer season for the Uvalde Lobos came to an end Tuesday night at Castroville.
The Lobos lost a 6-0 decision against the Boerne Lady Hounds, but the Class 4A Area round playoff match was closer than the final score indicates.
Boerne’s Lady Hounds broke open a scoreless defensive battle on a short-range shot with just over 18 minutes left in the first half.
Down 1-0 at halftime, the Lobos came close to scoring early in the second half.
Ahlaynah Barrientos attempted a shot from about 20 yards out, but her effort was blocked by the Boerne goalkeeper.
Five minutes later, Abby Kone had a free kick from 35 yards out.
Though her shot had the right height to clear the goalkeeper, the shot went wide to the left of the goal.
Near the midway point of the second half, Boerne scored two goals during a period of two minutes to blow the game open.
The Lady Hounds scored a goal with 11 minutes left to put the match away.
They scored another goal two minutes later to take a 5-0.
Rather than running out the clock near the end of the match, the Boerne girls scored another goal in the closing seconds to run their final scoring total up to six goals.
With the loss, Coach Keith Pendleton’s Lobos finish their season with a record of 18 wins, three losses, and two ties.
That is the best season record for any girls’ soccer team in Uvalde High School history.
In bi-district action last Friday night at San Antonio, the Uvalde Lobos recorded a 2-1 win over the Gonzales Lady Apaches.
With the score tied at 1-1 at halftime, the Lobos scored their match-winning goal in the second half.
Andrea Perez made a corner kick into the goal area.
Abby Kone attempted a shot, but it deflected off a Gonzales player.
From around 25 yards out, Perez got off a long range shot that went over the outstretched arms of the Gonzales goalkeeper and into the goal to give the Lobos their win.
In the first half, Fiona White scored a goal for the Lobos off an assist by Ahlaynah Barrientos.
