Trevon Diggs’ breakout season earned the respect more than just Cowboys fans and NFL award voters. It also earned him respect from some of his peers. Rams All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey spoke about Diggs on The Pivot Podcast in March.
Though Ramsey was complimentary of Diggs, ranking him the fourth-best cornerback in the NFL, not including himself, but said he hates being compared to the Cowboys youngster.
“It all depends on schemes,” Ramsey said when asked to rank the top five corners in the league.
“If you want high-risk, high-reward, I’m gonna go Trevon [Diggs], J.C. [Jackson], they’re gonna jump all the routes. If you wanna go somebody who, alright I’m just gonna put him on their No. 1 guy, and he’s gonna strap him.
“He’ll probably make some plays when they come to him but he’s not gonna force anything, and he’s really not gonna give up many plays. That’s when I’m going me, Marshon [Lattimore], Tre’Davious [White]. It’s kind of two different tiers of how we play.
“I ain’t gonna lie, I hate it when people compare me and Trevon. We play completely different, I always play out-of-phase he always plays in-phase.”
Ramsey discussed these matters with another expert on playing defensive back in the NFL: Ryan Clark. Clark played safety for three different teams across 13 seasons before retiring from the NFL in 2015.
Clark mentioned one of the key differences between Ramsey and Diggs was the fact that Trevon gave up over 1,000 yards to opposing receivers last season.
“That’s because he always plays in-phase,” Ramsey said of Diggs’ penchant for giving up yards.
“But he also had 11, 12, maybe 13 picks. He [takes chances]. It’s just a different style of how he plays. If you’re a guy who plays in-phase a lot, you’re gonna have to have a lot of picks. Which he does, though! So it’s working out for him, he’s one of the best at doing that.”
Diggs is already finding himself mentioned among the best cornerbacks in the NFL in just his second season in the league. Though he may play a different style of football than Jalen Ramsey, Diggs didn’t take long to earn praise from one of the elite cornerbacks in the NFL.
