West Michigan auto racing fans won’t have far to go to catch one of NASCAR’s rising stars this season.
William Byron, the 24-year-old Rick Hendrick Motorsports driver, is scheduled to race twice at the Berlin Raceway in Marne. The three-time NASCAR Cup Series winner will participate in the June 8 Money in the Bank 150 and the Aug. 10 Battle at Berlin, both Super Late Model races.
“It’s really a feather in the cap to hear that somebody like William Byron wants to run at the Berlin Raceway,” track general manager Jeff Striegle said. “We actually heard a rumor that he wanted to participate at Berlin during Speed Week down in Daytona. Our team reached out to William to talk about the possibility of him coming out, and he was excited about accepting the invitation.”
Byron pilots Hendrick’s No. 24 Chevrolet, and this marks his fifth season in Cup. He has three top-five finishes through seven races this season, including a win in the March 20 race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
The Money in the Bank and Battle at Berlin are both Wednesday night specials. The Battle at Berlin will offer $30,000-to-win while the Money in the Bank winner will earn $10,000. The field also will include NASCAR Cup regular Erik Jones of Byron and a pair of NASCAR Camping World Truck Series drivers in Chandler Smith and Carson Hocevar. Hocevcar is a Portage native and a former Berlin track champion.
Byron will be racing for Wilson Motorsports, which is based in Mooresville, N.C. Byron drove the team’s Super Late Model to victory in the March 19 Easter Bunny 150 at Hickory Motor Speedway as well as a 100-lapper at New Smyrna Speedway Feb. 19 during Speed Week.
Berlin will open its 72nd season on April 16 at 4 p.m.
