By Sean Jones: George Kambosos Jr says he’s already spotted signs of mental weakness in Devin Haney in the form of his stuttering, and he’s going to give him a beating when they meet for the undisputed lightweight championship.
It’s unclear what Haney’s stuttering has to do with fighting, but Kambosos seems to believe that he’ll be able to capitalize on that.
If this were a speech class or a singing contest, Haney’s stuttering would be an impediment, but fighting is a different story.
Unified lightweight champion Kambosos (20-0, 13 KOs) and WBC champion Haney (27-0, 15 KOs) will be headlining on ESPN from the Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia.
Haney backed into the fight after Kambosos’ original target Vasyl Lomachenko joined the territorial battalion in Ukraine to defend against the Russian invasion.
Kambosos sees mental weakness in Haney
“I see the mental weakness, and see it already with Devin Haney,” said George Kambosos Jr to Fighthype about him spotting weakness in Devin Haney ahead of their June 4th fight in Melbourne, Australia.
“I didn’t think I would see it that fast. Straightaway,” Kambosos said about him seeing weakness in 23-year-old Haney. “He stutters a lot for a guy that is supposedly a defensive kind of guy.
“That stuttering is not a good sign. You see me, I never stutter. I’m always zoned in and very sharp with what I say. After this fight and the beating, I’m preparing to lash out; it’s going to be worse,” said Kambosos.
Haney is going to be a real handful for Kambosos because he’s a lot more disciplined than Teofimo Lopez, and he’s not going to gas out the way he did.
“I’ll break him down before the fight; I know I will. I already have,” said Kambosos. “I’m fighting a guy with another piece [WBC lightweight title]. I want to collect that, and I will collect,” Kambosos said about Haney.
“I’m in my prime. I know he’s not in his prime yet. I’m back home after five years after I achieved all these belts, beating the best guy. It doesn’t matter who it was going to be. That’s what Haney has to understand.
“All you’re bringing is that half a piece [WBC title] that I want, and that’s it. That’s all I want. You come to the fight, and you get your pay. Hell of a pay too.
“I don’t know what are all these excuses of him taking less, and he’s only getting a small amount to make this fight happen. That’s a load of s***. He’s getting millions and millions of dollars.
“So come here, and we put on a great show and beat him. Not only beat him but beat him up. It’s very exciting because I know where I come from. I come from the trenches, and you see exactly where I come from,” said Kambosos.
Jorge Linares and Joseph Diaz Jr. had Haney hurt in their recent fights with him. Kambosos lacks their power, so he’s probably not going to hurt Haney.
George will gloat after June 4th
“That chip is still there on the shoulders, and it’ll never go,” said Kambosos. “The day it goes will probably be the day I hang them up. The experts don’t want to see me win.
“When this big fight happens, they’ll see that I haven’t forgotten,” said Kambosos, hinting that he’s going to be doing a bit of gloating afterward.
“I’m staying focused on Devin Haney. That’s the KID in front of me right now. I have to take him out, and I will be taking him out. I knew I’d fight Devin Haney.
“Regardless of how this all happened with the Lomachenko deal in place, I wanted Devin Haney. I want to put a full stop on this talk of this belt that he never had the pleasure of winning inside the ropes,” said Kambosos in alluding to Haney being elevated to WBC 135-lb champion outside of the ring rather than winning his title the normal way by beating someone.
“You’re not my mandatory; I could have fought anyone. Haney took the same deal [as Lomachenko]. It’s not the deal he wanted, but it’s good. This is going to be a long road.
“I’ve got a lot of fights, big ideas, and I just keep focusing one by one; I’ll continue to win. They can doubt me as much as they want, no problem.
“I’m a Spartan warrior; it’s the bloodlines. We’re built so tough and so mentally strong,” said Kambosos.
People doubt Kambosos because he’s only beaten one quality fighter during his career in Teofimo Lopez, and he was injured for their fight last November.
Many boxing fans believe that the only reason Kambosos beat Teofimi is that he wasn’t 100%. As such, Kambosos could get exposed by Haney, and it’ll be his doubters that will get the last laugh and gloat.
