With the support of the County of Maui Department of Environmental Management and some Maui tennis players, Maui Tennis Ball Recycling has shipped more than 21,000 used tennis balls to the Mainland since the summer of 2018, thereby diverting more than 2,700 pounds of waste from the landfill.
A recycling grant provided funds to purchase dedicated collection bins at Wells and Kula Parks. The grant also covered the cost to ship the balls in 2018 through 2020. In 2021, Maui County provided part of the funding to support the recycling effort.
