Every PGA Tour week has a weekend storyline, and the 2022 Zurich Classic is no different. Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele are up one on two teams and up two on two others heading into Saturday’s four-ball play, where Cantlay and Schauffele shot a tournament-record 59 in Round 1. They’ll be chased over the next 36 by all the teams that made the cut, but the problem is that only six twosomes are even within five strokes of their 17-under number.
The other problem, of course, is that Cantlay and Schauffele are both ranked in the top 12 in the Official World Golf Rankings and often feast on the lesser players chasing them. However, there are two other top-15 golfers — Billy Horschel and Sam Burns — within striking distance. They sit at 14 under and have the most realistic chance of making a real run at the Ryder Cup teammates at the top of the pile after 36 holes.
After two days of tremendous scoring and another four-ball session on deck on Saturday, the movement should be furious from the first tee balls on Saturday morning. Cantlay and Schauffele are expected to keep their lead and go on to win the tournament, but that doesn’t count for much on Friday evening, and the next two days should be pretty chaotic.
