CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – University of Alabama women’s golf head coach Mic Potter has been named one of 20 coaches on the 2022 Jackie Steinmann Women’s Golf Coaches Association National Coach of the Year Presented by Golf Pride Watch List, it was announced by the WGCA Monday.
Potter, who is in his 17th season at the helm of the Crimson Tide, led the women’s golf team to seven top-four finishes through eight regular-season tournaments this season. That stretch featured a runner-up finish at the Mason Rudolph Championship and a championship finish at The Ally, where the Tide led wire-to-wire for a 10-stroke triumph.
That tournament title helped him to 64 career wins as a head coach, the fourth-most by any active coach in the country.
At the SEC Championships last month, Potter guided the Crimson Tide lineup from 11th place after the first round to T5th place at the end of stroke play. Alabama’s run at the league tournament also featured a take down of the No. 3 team in the nation in South Carolina in the match-play quarterfinals.
Under Potter’s watch, two Alabama players have earned medalist honors this season, including Benedetta Moresco’s record-breaking performance at The Ally and Polly Mack’s finale win at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. Moresco, who was named the 2022 Southeastern Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year, also represented Alabama with her fourth-place finish at the 2022 Augusta National Women’s Amateur.
Alabama is one of just three teams in the country to have two players ranked in the Golfstat Top 15 ahead of postseason, joining Standford and Wake Forest, including Mack at No. 7 and Moresco at No. 14.
Perhaps most noteworthy, it was announced last week that Potter has led the Alabama women’s golf team to its 16th straight NCAA Regional appearance. He has led the Crimson Tide to the regional championship every year since taking over the program in 2005-06.
Recognized as the highest annual coaching honor in women’s collegiate golf, the Jackie Steinmann WGCA National Coach of the Year Presented by Golf Pride is awarded annually to the top coach in Division I women’s golf. The recipient is selected by a prestigious collection of women’s collegiate golf coaches who follow criteria that has been established to identify the top head coach for the past year:
- The award will be determined by vote from the Division I Awards Committee upon review of the 10 highest ranked coaches in each region and their respective records for the year.
- From that list, the committee will determine the Golf Pride Regional Coach of the Year.
- The top three per region, based on the vote, will be considered by the Committee for the Division I Jackie Steinmann WGCA National Coach of the Year Presented by Golf Pride and this will be based on the entire seasons’ results.
