We’re back for another week of MiLB.TV on MLB.TV.
We laid out how this operation works last month during its inception, but here’s a refresher:
Select Minor League games will be available to stream on MLB.TV this season. MLB.TV subscribers can watch some of the game’s top prospects through that service at no additional cost. If you like what you see there, all available Minor League games are streamed on MiLB.TV, and you can add that to your existing MLB.TV subscription for only $25.
This is the Minor League slate MLB.TV subscribers can expect this week:
Tuesday, May 3, 11:05 a.m. ET — New Hampshire Fisher Cats (TOR) @ Somerset Patriots (NYY)
We started our MLB Pipeline Game of the Month series at Somerset’s TD Bank Ballpark last Thursday, and the Patriots’ broadcast is headed back to MLB.TV five days later.
Top Yankees prospect Anthony Volpe, who turned 21 on that Thursday, is heating up in his first turn at the Double-A level. The shortstop owns a .273/.457/.546 line with two homers, six steals and an 8/12 K/BB ratio through his last 10 games for Somerset. The New Jersey native told MLB Pipeline last week that he has felt his timing come back since he struggled out of the gate in the Eastern League, and the numbers bear that out as he’s marrying some power with an improved contact rate.
Volpe won’t be the only major shortstop prospect in Tuesday’s matinee.
New Hampshire’s lineup is expected to include No. 36 overall prospect Orelvis Martinez. The 20-year-old Blue Jays infielder was the second-youngest player on an Eastern League Opening Day roster to begin the 2022 season and has held his own when it comes to slugging. Despite his youth, Martinez is tied for third in the EL with six homers and places 10th among 90 qualifiers with a .304 isolated slugging percentage. He has made six starts at third base as well in an attempt to get out of Bo Bichette’s shadow at the six.
Saturday, May 7, 7:35 p.m. ET — Arkansas Travelers (SEA) @ Frisco RoughRiders (TEX)
No. 17 overall prospect Jack Leiter got the MiLB.TV on MLB.TV series going almost two weeks ago, and as Frisco’s designated Saturday starter, the former Vanderbilt star returns to the spotlight this weekend.
The 22-year-old right-hander has shown flashes of what makes him one of the most promising arms in the Minor Leagues with a 2.84 ERA and 19 strikeouts over four starts (12 2/3 innings) in his first taste of Double-A. However, he has walked nine in that same span and has yet to pitch past the fourth inning as the Rangers watch his early workload.
Frisco’s home game Saturday could work well as a potential doubleheader for Texas fans since the Rangers are scheduled for a day game at 1:05 p.m. ET at Yankee Stadium.
No matter who takes the mound for Arkansas — and that could include No. 3 Mariners prospect George Kirby — Saturday could be a pitchers’ duel between the two sides. Travelers pitchers lead the Texas League with 214 strikeouts and rank second in the circuit with a collective 4.13 ERA and 1.35 WHIP.
Sunday, May 8, 10:35 p.m. ET — Hillsboro Hops (ARI) @ Eugene Emeralds (SFG)
End your weekend in the Northwest League, listening to the beautiful sounds of Marco Luciano’s lasers off the bat.
The top Giants prospect is off to a hot start in his return to Eugene with a .328/.380/.578 line and four homers through 18 games, entering Monday. His .958 OPS ranks third in the High-A circuit to this point — a stark improvement over his .577 mark in the category over a 36-game span late last season. Luciano, who has plus-plus raw power, has cut his NWL strikeout rate from 37.2 percent in 2021 to 22.5, and that’s aided his turnaround at the level.
