LAHAINA — William “Bill” Tatro has lived a rich and diverse life. He is a husband, father and grandfather who had a career on Wall Street and in communications before moving to Maui from New York to continue his journey of positive action.
Tatro signed on as an alternative education teacher and coach — he was a standout football and basketball player in college — at Lahainaluna some five years ago and has since made a distinct imprint on the West Side community.
He put his focus into the at-risk seniors struggling to achieve passing grades and eligibility for graduation.
“We tried to support the students that were getting D’s and F’s and had personal problems,” Tatro explained last week. “We created the curriculum that covered six to eight subjects and refused to do online learning. There were eight students in the class, and five of them were seniors. They all passed and will graduate, with two of them attending U.H. Maui in the fall.”
His contribution to higher education didn’t go unnoticed. For his diligent work with the at-risk students, Tatro was recently honored as the Lahaina Canoe Complex (which includes North Kihei, Lanai and Molokai.) “Teacher of the Year.”
After being notified of the honor, Tatro simply stated that he lives the adage of “…take a walk in the other guy’s shoes.” Indeed, a most noble life pathway.
As an accomplished collegiate athlete, Tatro also mentored the Luna boys golf team this spring. Despite the confusion of the pandemic, the program competed at the top levels of the Maui Interscholastic League, finished with a 6-5-1 record in dual meets and sent all nine team members to the post- season tournament.
Coach Tatro was assisted by Neal Collins, and the team roster included Captains Ian Chapital and Joa Navarro, along with Cameron Jones, Khai Mullen, Gavin Melikidse, Kainalu Teeters, Kadin Finlayson, Tainoa Buenconsejo and Trent Kaiser.
“Sherie Golden at the Kaanapali Resort golf course has been incredibly accommodating for the team. And the entire staff there and the community has supported the team in so many ways,” he said.
“In honor of her late husband, Kent Diamond, who loved playing the Kaanapali Golf Course, Susan Diamon generously sponsored new team jerseys and bucket hats for both the varsity and junior varsity golf teams,” Coach Tatro concluded.
