Continuing their strong form from the second half of the season, the Marshalltown girls’ basketball team had a consistent victory over Waukee Northwest on Monday afternoon to clinch a second-straight CIML Iowa Conference title with an unbeaten dual record — after winning the conference invite last week. The 169-195 margin was helped by a 3-over-par 38 from senior Amber Henson, who celebrated Senior Day with yet another medalist-winning performance.
The front nine at Elmwood Country Club presented a challenge for the Bobcats and the Wolves, with difficult pins in place thanks to the Classic having been played at the course over the weekend.
Both head coach Lucas Johnson and Henson said the rough’s thickness had an impact as well, penalizing missed shots more than it did earlier in the spring.
“The course was not playing easy today,” Johnson said. “The rough is getting a little bit longer, it’s getting a little bit more challenging around the greens as things start to firm up. The girls got a little taste of what Elmwood can bring.
“It’s our home course, we come out here and expect to win and we know what’s hard for us is going to be even harder for other teams.”
Henson’s round included highs and lows — with a triple-bogey 7 on the par-4 fourth hole countered by birdies on 7 and 8 to close out the round. The senior missed birdie putts on the par-3 sixth and the ninth hole to add to her tally.
In second on the team was fellow senior Norah Wilson, who shot an 8-over 43 and recorded two triple-bogeys and one birdie on the par-5 seventh hole. Johnson credited Wilson with providing a solid counting score and a runner-up finish in the meet.
Third in the meet and third for the Bobcats was freshman Natalie Henson, who had an up-and-down afternoon (including an 8 on the par-4 second hole) but canned a putt from off the green on the ninth to end her round on a high. Another freshman popped up with the fourth score in Gaby Estabrook.
Estabrook turned in a 9-over 44 and was the final counting score, something Johnson said is a sign of the team’s improvement over the season with different players able to step up and make contributions. Marshalltown swept the top-4 individual finishers in the dual.
Amber Henson made sure to point out the Bobcats’ younger players had performances that impressed her.
“I’m really proud of how far this group has come, even from the beginning of this season,” Henson said. “Gaby, she shot bogey golf today and that was really impressive for her. She came out when it mattered the most, so that was really important for the team.
Everyone played really good today.”
Senior Brynn Van Buren shot a 48 and Autumn Thompson shot a 52 to round out scoring for the Bobcats.
Leading the way for Waukee Northwest was Chloe Sundet with a 44 and Hannah Pettit with a 45.
Marshalltown now turns its attention to regionals, with the Bobcats hosting at Elmwood on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with a chance to reach state.
