By Allan Fox: Light-welterweight prospect Richardson Hitchins says Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero is too green to defeat WBA ‘regular’ lightweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis in their fight on Showtime Championship Boxing on May 28th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Hitchins notes that the 26-year-old Rolly (14-0, 12 KOs) didn’t start boxing until he was 17, and he struggled in fights against Avery Sparrow and Jackson Marinez.
As far as Hitchins is concerned, the only things Rolly has going for him in this fight are size & power, which will not be enough for him to defeat Gervonta.
Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz, Leo Santa Cruz, and Mario Barrios gave Tank Davis a devil of a time in their recent fights. For Tank to be struggling to beat those guys is a red flag that he’s not as good as some boxing fans and media members think he is.
You don’t struggle against Barrios, Cruz, and a washed Santa Cruz if you’re great. Moreover, Tank had problems against a one-legged 40-year-old Yuriorkis Gamboa after the Cuban fighter tore an Achilles in the second round.
“I think Rolly is a great fighter. I don’t want to say because it sounds cliche, but he been hurt by a guy from Philly that is 10-3,” said light-welterweight prospect Richardson Hitchins to Fighthype about Rolly Romero not being as good as Gervonta Davis.
“He got hurt by [Avery] Sparrow; he got touched up by [Jackson] Marinez. Tank is, on the whole, another level,” Hitchins continued. “If he [Rolly] goes in and has a competitive fight with this guy, then Tank isn’t the fighter we know him to be.”
Power & size might be more than enough for Rolly to win this fight if he can put hands on Tank Davis early. If you watched Rolly’s fights against Marinez & Sparrow, he dished out some awful punishment against both of those guys.
You got to give Marinez & Sparrow credit for taking many hellacious shots from Rolly in those fights because they were hit with punches that would knockout welterweights.
“I don’t see him dealing with Tank. He’s looking for power. You can hear how he’s talking in his interviews. ‘Tank is going to be running around and such and such.
“He called Tank’s boxing against Isaac Cruz, ‘Running.’ He’s [Rolly] green and started boxing at 17. This is a guy that you can’t take serious. He has to prove himself.
“No matter if Gervonta is fighting you, he must stay intelligent. One fight can change anything. I think it’s going to be what we all expect. I truly believe that I don’t see Rolly beating him whatsoever.
“Rolly has been in tough fights with guys that were nowhere near Tank’s level, guys [Jackson Marinez] that Richard Commey knocked out in two rounds.
“Rolly is a green fighter. He’s looking for power; that’s all he’s looking for. He’s got size going for him and power and nothing else,” said Hitchins. “I don’t have a prediction. I have Tank winning the fight.”
