An 18-year-old from Chance Cove, Trinity Bay made history on the weekend, as the youngest woman to ever drive in the NASCAR Pinty’s Proline 225 at Eastbound Park in Avondale.
Sara Thorne says she only had a few laps prior to the race in the Dodge rented from DJ Kennington to get a feel for the machine. Her goal was to make it through the full 225 laps, which she did.
She calls the experience physically and mentally challenging.
Thorne admits to a bit of nerves after spinning out a few times on the turns.
“You have to take some to get along,” says Thorne who says the first spin-out wasn’t entirely her fault.
Thorne describes getting used to the power and grip of the car as she made her way around the track with some of the country’s best drivers.
“The car has so much grip, it was…really hard to get her down around the turns, she just holds on so well,” remarks Thorne.
She’s hoping to get back into the Pinty’s series when it returns to Eastbound next year, and in the meantime, Thorne has been invited to test out a car in Ontario, which she admits, might not be in her price range, but is hopeful might be doable next year.
