Friends of Ramona Unified Schools (FORUS) members cheered after learning that initial results of H5 Financial’s Chip in for Education FORUS Golf Tournament show the fundraiser netted $15,623.
The tournament, presented by H5 Financial on behalf of the nonprofit FORUS, was held at the Mt. Woodson Golf Club on June 17. FORUS’ mission is to raise money for health and safety projects at Ramona schools. The group has targeted $14,011 of tournament proceeds for an intercom system at Barnett Elementary School.
“FORUS greatly appreciates Shelly Heimer and the staff of H5 Financial, Mt. Woodson Golf Course, and all the sponsors and community members that came out to golf and support at the annual Chip In For Education Golf Tournament,” said FORUS Board President Kevin Barger.
Barger said the FORUS family includes the community of Ramona and all schools in the Ramona Unified School District.
With one exception, H5 Financial owner Shelly Heimer has presented a Chip in for Education golf tournament on behalf of FORUS every June since 2015. The exception was 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down community events.
This year’s Chip in for Education fundraiser attracted 101 golfers. Hole sponsors set up tables at each of the 18 holes, offering treats or fun games to golfers as they played the course. Montessori Children’s House and Children’s Elementary volunteers donated the $304 they raised at their table offering Yahtzee play as golfers passed by.
Silent auction items and an opportunity drawing raised more money. When Escondido resident and tournament golfer Daisy Toth learned she had won $672 in the drawing, she refused it, saying “give it back to the kids.”
Heimer treated everyone to pizza at the end of the tournament as Perry Dotson, Mt. Woodson’s head professional, tallied scores from the 24 teams. Trophies went to the top teams, with the first place trophy for the team with the lowest score — 53 — going to Mark Engel, Ashley Dunlap, Mike Parenti and Bill Pavlick.
Heimer presented plaques to the top event sponsors, giving special thanks to Platinum Sponsor United Wholesale Mortgage (UWM), headquartered in Michigan. UWM has sponsored the tournament every year since its inception, Heimer said, with its senior account executive, Lara Chehab, whose birthday was the day of the tournament, and account executive Anthony Shlemon coming from Michigan to participate in the tourney.
Other top sponsors receiving plaques were Gold sponsors Basile and Brenda McGuiness, Rancho Land Co. and Lunch Sponsor Ramona Dental.
FORUS holds meetings the second and fourth Wednesday of each month during the school year at 6 p.m. in the Nico Diaz Center at Montecito High School, 720 Ninth St. All are welcome.
