Both teams have ties connecting them to Seattle. The Clippers owner Steve Ballmer lives nearby. Jody Allen, the Trail Blazers’ chair, has run the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks since 2018.
Seattle did not have an NBA team since 2008 when the Seattle Supersonics were sold and moved to Oklahoma City and renamed to Thunder.
One of the major reasons why the team got moved in 2008 was the home of the Supersonics, the Key Arena, which was getting outdated and did not receive necessary improvements. The preseason between the Trail Blazers and the Clippers will be played in the new Climate Pledge Arena.
