GREENWICH — There will soon be a new way to hit the links in Greenwich — in the comfort of the indoors — as a “virtual golf” range prepares to open at a soon-to-be-vacated fitness center in the west end of town.
Rock Pile Golf will open soon, taking over the space used by Greenwich Fitness off Holly Hill Lane behind 600 W. Putnam Ave.
The Planning & Zoning Commission gave tentative approval to the proposal last Thursday. The commission wanted to ensure that enough parking in the office complex was dedicated to the operation. The golf business would have 13 parking spaces.
The golfing operation will open at 7 a.m., and clients will use a reservation system through the afternoons. A lounge and bar area with 21 seats will operate after 4 p.m., according to the application.
“I’d be OK with you moving forward,” Planning Commission Chairwoman Margarita Alban told the development team. “We’d just like to have some assurance that you have enough (parking) coverage.”
Three employees will work there in the first half of the day, five later in the day. Three golf instructors will be assigned to the operation.
The operation will house six golf simulator rooms, each measuring 15-feet in depth, along with a putting area. “Rock Pile Golf would primarily provide golf instruction and serve as a virtual driving range,” the application states.
The golf ranges feature a screen that participants swing toward, and there are a number of safety features embedded in the golfing operation. The walls are covered with a soft fabric.
The complex, owned by a company affiliated with developer John Fareri, also comprises the Citarella food market and a number of medical offices on a lower level in the rear. The plan calls for interior renovations to fit out 5,595 square feet of recreational space for the golfing business.
The proposal was granted unanimous approval by the commission, with a condition attached on the necessary parking for the project.
