Mexico’s next great flyweight is Sergio “Yoreme” Mendoza 16-0 (15 KOs), who headlines the new boxing series, “Canela Box Nights,” this Friday night at Sonora Arena in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico.
“Canela Fight Nights was created by CANELA MEDIA, a leading, minority-owned technology driven company committed to redefining digital media experiences for the Hispanic Community, and World Cup Boxing Series (WCBS), led by its creators CEO Terry Holland and promoter/matchmaker Guy Taylor.
“Canela Box Nights” will stream live and free the 3rd Friday of every month, starting July 22nd at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT, throughout the United States, Mexico, and Latin America.
Mendoza (16-0, 15 KOs) is on a mission to eventually join an elite group of Mexican world flyweight champions such as Fernando Montiel (the color analyst for “Canala Fight Nights”), Jorge Arce, Gutsy Espadas and Miguel Canto.
Fighting at home in Hermosillo, the 22-year-old Mendoza headlines this Friday night against veteran Francisco “Charrito” Gomez (14-8, 11 KOs), who has fought three world champions during his 8-year pro career, in the 10-round main event.
“I am very motivated because I know that many people will see me fight and more, because I am fighting at home,” Mendoza said. “I don’t feel nervous or pressured. I am well prepared because I’ve spent two months training on the mountains of Mexico with my team: Alfredo Caballero, sparring partner David Picasso and head trainer Alejandro Porras.
“I am very excited but have many mixed feelings. I feel that after winning this fight, I am going to burst into tears. I have been through many difficult situations in my life, from not having money to eat or take a bus, but now being one of the best in the flyweight division is a dream come true for me.”
Self-described as having a style that’s a mix of technical skills and aggressiveness, Mendoza adjusts to what his opponent does, knowing when it’s time to close the show. Mendoza has heavy hands as well as being a gifted boxer.
“I feel that I’m in the best shape of my life,” Mendoza concluded. “I am ready for the best fighters in my division. I’m very hungry to get ahead and I do not mind having to fight the best of the best.”
