After beating Roger Federer and winning the semifinals at Roland Garros in 2014, Ernests Gulbis was no longer able to express his talent with continuity. The Latvian player has won 6 ATP titles, scored major successes against Federer and Novak Djokovic over the course of his career and worried Rafael Nadal on clay on more than one occasion.
The definitive leap in quality, considering the enormous potential, has never arrived. Gulbis is trying to carve out his space on the Challenger circuit to try to reach the top 100 once again. The former top ten has already shown that he can climb the rankings and raise the level.
About ten years ago, after having dropped to the 160th position in the ranking, he had the strength to regain the top of tennis; while between 2018 and 2019, when he had to deal with a serious elbow injury, he even gained more than 500 positions.
Gulbis insults young opponent: “Learn to play tennis, man”
Last February, Gulbis decided to rely on the Piatti Tennis Center in Bordighera, led by Riccardo Piatti, to improve his fitness and relaunch at high levels.
The Latvian is currently busy at the ATP Challenger in Trieste and has made headlines at the end of the match which allowed him to grab the main draw. Gulbis defeated 23-year-old Matteo Martineau in two sets and will face Santiago Rodriguez Taverna in the first round.
After beating the Frenchman, Gulbis addressed some unsportsmanlike words to his opponent during the handshake. “I won and you lost. Learn to play tennis, man. Today, if I have to be honest, I played very badly and I beat you anyway,” Gulbis declared in the words collected by Punto de Break.
Gulbis will return to the field today and will make his debut in the main draw on the Grand Stand. The Latvian will have to wait for the match between Matheus Pucinelli de Almeida and Zhizhen Zhang and the one between Salvatore Caruso and Giovanni Oradini.
