CHARLES TOWN — Staff members from schools across Jefferson County came to Locust Hill Golf Course on Wednesday for the New Teacher Welcome Luncheon.
Jefferson County Board of Education Vice President Mark Osbourn addressed the new teachers after general introductions made by Chris Puller, president of the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce.
“You have come to a place that is safe,” Osbourn said. “This is a great place to live.”
Charity Marstiller, a vocational agriculture teacher at Jefferson High School, was recognized as the Jefferson County Teacher of the Year for 2022.
A plaque was given to Marstiller by Puller, and Marstiller gave a speech that addressed the new teachers. The speech compared the teaching profession to the sport of golf because of the event’s location on a golf course.
“Just as more experienced golfers have honed their craft,” Marstiller said, “just remember that they all had to start somewhere.”
Marstiller continued with golf-themed inspirational words for when hardship arises for the new teachers.
“You’re going to find yourself this year navigating hazards as you prepare students for learning,” she said.
Marstiller gave the new teachers advice on who to turn to when trouble arises.
“It is OK to swing and miss,” she said. “Surround yourself with mentors who can be that caddy in the classroom.”
Teachers return to the classroom next week, and school starts back up for students on Aug. 22.
