Now that the temperature is down and the golf dust has settled, once again, here are the 2022 Men’s Club Champions by category. Senior Men’s Club Champion is Chuck Allegrini, the Men’s Club Handicap winner is Jim Ellis and the Men’s Club Scratch Champion is Collin Fling. Golf Notes, as in the past, was unable to tag along on the Championship match, but Phil Dunn, the 2021 Men’s Club Scratch Champion did witness the event. Using Phil’s well-constructed notes, here is a more fleshed-out version of the match between Collin Fling and Matt Howard. Going into the third hole the match was knotted. Both players cracked their drives down the middle, but Collin’s second shot found the left penalty area. Matt’s ball hit the fairway. Collin recovered nicely out of the penalty area, landing on the green’s fringe. The pair walked away from the hole still tied. Collin and Matt remained even for the next two holes, but on hole six Matt’s ball strayed out of bounds. Collin, in Phil’s words, “Played the hole as designed to go one up”. On eight Matt had to contend with the trees, which resulted in a bogey, giving Collin two up. The first nine ended with Collin three up bogie to par on nine.
On ten Matt drove his ball over the cart path, rolled his chip off the green front, but then chipped in for a birdie recovering to two down. Going into the thirteenth-hole Collin was still two up, but then sunk a 25-foot putt for birdie, moving him back to three up. Collin won fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, and seventeen to go seven up. On eighteen Matt drove the green setting himself up for a 20-foot-eagle putt, but made birdie, bringing him six down on the turn. The match remained Collin up six through holes nineteen, twenty, and twenty-one. On twenty-two Collin birdied and on twenty-three Collin parred to Matt’s bogey, giving him an eight-stroke lead. Collin went on to win the next three holes, and in Phil’s words “Sometimes your flat stick just doesn’t work so well”. Unfortunately for Matt, today was that day.” Also, in Phil’s words, “The 26th hole of the Club Championship is where Collin secured victory with a closeout birdie”. Congratulations on your win Mr. Fling but look out. We are coming after you next year.”
Our own Butch Carlstadt again, shot his 89 years of age last week. Butch just doesn’t give up. One of Butch’s eyes virtually has no sight. Therefore, Butch has little depth perception. Kind of essential in golf. Butch said he has hit a thousand dandelions in his yard. By doing so Butch is trying to retrain/reset his brain/eyes depth perception. Interesting. Need dandelion removal? Better call Butch.
