The Eagles soared over the Rebels to claw a 6-1 win at a girls tennis match held on Tuesday, Sept. 20.
After losing her first set 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Rebel Kelsie Chapman retired from the match, making Eagle Ally Mersman the default winner.
No. 2 singles, meanwhile, brought a Rebel victory. Brylee Nuebauer battled hard against Maple River’s Madison Ward to secure a win for USC.
The first set was settled in Ward’s favor by a tiebreaker, but Nuebauer fought back to win the second set 6-3 and the third set 6-1.
At No. 3 singles, Eagle Macy Sohre defeated Rebel Lauren Hanson 6-0, 6-2, and USC’s Carmen Hernandez also suffered a defeat to Maple River’s Tabitha Barkosky at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-2.
Maya Hansen and Olivia Bungum represented USC at No. 1 doubles against Maple River’s Kelsey Jaeger and Claire Langworthy. The Eagles took the match 6-3, 6-3.
No. 2 doubles pitted Eagles Mackenzie Walters and Norah Davis against Rebels Addison Mithun and Ivy O’Rourke. Walters and Davis were victorious in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.
Maple River also triumphed 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 doubles when Eagles Brooke Reuter and Ellie Braaten defeated Rebels Juliana Clore and Emma Johnson.
Sibley East 6, USC 1
The Sibley East Wolverines snapped a 6-1 win from the USC Rebels at a match held on Thursday, Sept. 15.
Rebel Chapman fought a close match against Wolverine Mallory Sylvester at No. 1 singles. Though Chapman took the first set 6-4, the second set was Sylvester’s 6-2. A tight third set eventually went to Sylvester, 13-11.
USC’s Nuebauer continued her winning streak at No. 2 singles, defeating Sibley East’s Morgan Haggenmiller, 7-5, 6-4.
No. 3 singles brought another victory for the Wolverines when Morgan Thoele beat USC’s Lauren Hansen 6-0, 6-4.
Rebel Maya Hansen was also defeated by Sibley East’s Amelia Kratzke at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 7-6.
The Wolverines played a tough game at doubles, taking each of the three doubles matches in straight sets.
Rebels Mithun and Bungum played Wolverines Holly Otto and Jessica Widmer at No. 1 doubles. Sibley East came away with the win, 6-1, 6-2.
At No. 2 doubles, it was USC’s Clore and O’Rourke against Sibley East’s Jada Henke and Shelby Dieball. Henke and Dieball were victorious 6-3, 6-1 over the Rebel pair.
Rebecca Redman and Ady Beneke brought a final win for Sibley East against Rebels Caitlin Rheingans and Emma Johnson, 6-1, 6-3.
The Rebels traveled to play Tri-City United on Thursday, Sept. 22.
The following Saturday, Sept. 24, they will play St. James Area, Redwood Valley and River Valley at a tournament held at the St. James Tennis Courts.
USC will hit the road again on Monday, Sept. 26, to play Blue Earth Area, and on Tuesday, Sept. 27, to play Belle Plaine Schools.
