The San Antonio Spurs are heading into what is pretty much the first rebuild in franchise history. They traded away NBA All-Star point guard Dejounte Murray to the Atlanta Hawks, signaling their intentions for the upcoming season.
San Antonio is planning to lose and lose a lot. They have a few veterans on the roster that could be on the move in the coming months as the Spurs will look to compile as many future assets as possible.
They have done a great job of that over the last year or so, as they own all of their first-round picks going forward in addition to five extra first-round picks.
The Spurs are putting themselves in the best position to cash in during the 2023 NBA Draft. They have their sights set on one of the top prospects, as they would love to add Victor Wembanyama or Scoot Henderson to their roster.
While there will be growing pains this season, San Antonio has a roster that is full of high-upside young talent. If they can add another blue-chip prospect to the mix, they will have something brewing for sustained success in the future.
LATEST NBA NEWS: Devin Vassell & San Antonio Spurs Updates
They have already locked in Keldon Johnson long-term, as he agreed to a four-year rookie extension this offseason. He has made great strides throughout his career and they are hopeful that Devin Vassell will be able to do the same. Josh Richardson recently spoke highly about the young Spurs duo at practice.
“I probably say Devin [Vassell]. I think Keldon [Johnson] took a big step last year and I think he’s going to take another step this year but I think people are going to get to see what Devin can do a little bit more this year,” Richardson said. “With the ball in his hands and seeing how much of a versatile game he has.”
Vassell was the No. 11 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft out of Florida State. Given the depth and how Leonard Hamilton uses his rotation with the Seminoles, prospects sometimes are unable to show their full repertoire. In two seasons with the Spurs, Vassell has shown flashes of what he is capable of.
LATEST NBA NEWS: Devin Vassell & San Antonio Spurs Updates
Looking at a larger role this upcoming season, taking another step forward is certainly possible. He has prototypical two-way size, standing 6’5” with a 6’10” wingspan. He improved as a 3-point shooter in his second season and with an expanded offensive role waiting for him, Vassell could push his points per game average into the mid-high teens this season.
San Antonio is notorious for developing players and will have a chance to do it once again with the young players on their roster. Vassell is one of the players they have high hopes for as his third-year leap could be a special one.
