Dennis Hogan secured his long-awaited world title when he defeated IBO super-welterweight champion Sam Eggington via majority decision at Newcastle Entertainment Centre on Saturday.
In a tough and tight affair, Hogan was able beat Eggington to the punch just enough to earn the nod on two judges’ cards.
Earlier, Nikita Tszyu blasted through Darkon Dryden in a dominant performance.
The talented southpaw put on a clinic, eventually seeing Dryden’s corner call a stop to proceedings after three hectic rounds.
Here’s how it went down:
Super Saturday Boxing Festival live results, updates
Sam Eggington def. Dennis Hogan
Dennis Hogan wins the IBO super-welterweight title!
The Australian-based Irishman earned a hard-fought 12-round majority decision victory over tough Englishman Sam Eggington.
(116-112 x2, 114-114)
Round 12: Eggington pours the pressure on but Hogan stands up well and even lands some solid counters of his own. The Irish-Aussie gets the nod on our unofficial scorecard. Let’s see what the judges think. 10-9 Hogan (116-112 Hogan)
Round 11: Eggington fighting with a lot more urgency now. Hogan is closing the distance well and staying out of the way of the Englishman’s power shots. A real dogfight now. 10-9 Eggington (106-103)
Round 10: Hogan is starting to look comfortable with what Eggington is bringing. The work of the jab and left hook is showing in the form of swelling around Eggington’s right eye. 10-9 Hogan (97-93)
Round 9: Hogan lands a couple solid combos to keep the pressure on. Depending how the judges are seeing it, Eggington may need to put the foot down soon. 10-9 Hogan (87-84)
Round 8: Yet another close round. Hogan edges it thanks to greater activity on our card. 10-9 Hogan (77-75)
Round 7: More of the same from this pair. They both look to be trying to time the other’s shots with counters, seeing them repeatedly throw at the same time. Another one that could go either way. 10-9 Eggington (67-66)
Round 6: Geez, this is not an easy one to score. Both fighters have their moments, particularly in the form of counter hooks. Hogan just on our card. 10-9 Hogan (58-56)
Round 5: Eggington bounces back. We’ll give him that one on our unofficial scorecard courtesy of several straight rights which found the target. Hogan didn’t appear hurt. 10-9 Eggington (48-47)
Round 4: A solid round from challenger Hogan. Lands a few decent shots upstairs from in close. 10-9 Hogan (39-37)
Round 3: This looks like it’s going to be a tough one to score. Another tight round. We give it to Hogan but with no confidence. 10-9 Hogan (29-28)
Round 2: Another close one. We’re giving it to Eggington as he appeared to control the ring a little better and land the more telling shots. 10-9 Eggington (19-19)
Round 1: A close and cagey opening round from both men. Hogan maybe slightly more active but could have gone either way. 10-9 Hogan
Nikita Tszyu def. Darkon Dryden
That’s it! Dryden’s team have had enough. Tszyu’s punishment proved too much for the fan favourite in front of his home crowd. Dryden retires before the fourth round.
Round 3: What a round! These two are putting on a crazy pace. Tszyu gets to work on the body with plenty of success. Dryden had his moments but it seemed like everything he threw was coming back with interest. 30-27 Tszyu
Round 2: An even better second frame for Tszyu who has Dryden hurt with a pair of left hands early on. Dryden looks at least a step behind, with Tszyu easily able to avoid any of his significant shots. 20-18 Tszyu
Round 1: Big opening round for Tszyu. Definitely found his feet quick than Dryden and landed several nice combos on the local boy. 10-9 Tszyu
Sam Goodman def. Jason Cooper via unanimous decision (100-90, 99-91 x2)
The classy Goodman overcomes a game Cooper in a cagey bout.
No Limit CEO George Rose tells fans after the fight that Goodman can expect to be on Tim Tszyu’s world title undercard in Las Vegas in January.
9:45pm: We have a glove drama ahead of the IBO world title bout!
Sam Eggington, unbeknown to Dennis Hogan and his team, opted to wear Hogan’s second pair of gloves, as established in Friday’s rules meeting.
Hogan’s team reports Eggington preferred to wear the green gloves which would match his trunks.
IBO official Justin Fitzgerald is now attempting to find a solution.
Cody Beeken def. Lachlan Higgins via split decision (60-54, 58-56, 56-58)
In a tightly contested clash, Beeken earned the nod on two judges’ cards.
Neither fighter was able to land any shots of real significance, with Beeken’s higher output proving the difference in the end.
Darragh Foley def. Blake Minto via unanimous decision (98-92, 96-94, 97-93)
After a bright start from Minto, Foley was eventually able to take control of the bout.
The fight, which was a slightly scrappy affair at times, was largely fought at close range.
Ayisha Abied def. Shanell Dargan via split decision (48-47 x2, 47-48)
The featherweights put on an excellent spectacle to open the pay-per-view.
Abied for the nod in a split decision but Dargan, who is no stranger to a barnburner, lost no admirers with her performance.
7:12pm: The pay-per-view portion of the evening is set to begin, kicking off with a featherweight clash between Shanell Dargan and Ayisha Abied.
