If you wanted to see a team apply lessons learned from an overtime loss to turn their next game into a win, this was the game for you. Less than 24 hours after falling in overtime to the Anaheim Ducks, the Kraken took to the ice in Los Angeles. They efforted a composed game and maintained focus throughout 60 minutes of play backed by solid goaltending from Martin Jones. On their way to a 4-1 victory, four different Seattle skaters scored and both sides of special teams produced including a heady penalty kill late to keep the Kings off the board as they fought to narrow the gap, ultimately adding two standing points to the Kraken’s tally for three total through two games played. A successful road trip, indeed.
Let’s look at the game “by the numbers.”
- According to Natural Stat Trick, in five-on-five play the Kraken earned 42.42-percent of all shot attempts and 49.82-percent of all shot quality. That’s an effort to be proud of against a Kings squad that like to still opponents’ transition game and stifle their offensive generation.
- Matty Beniers continues to be productive. He added his second assist of the young season to his stat line (1-2-3) and generated the most individual shot quality of any Kraken skater (.27 expected goals in 5-on-5 play).
- Alex Wennberg scored his first goal of the season. Per hockeystatcards.com, his overall efforts earned him the highest individual game score of any skater in the game (2.11).
- In all situations, per MoneyPuck.com, the Kings were expected to score just over 2.5 goals. Martin Jones held them to just one. 54 pucks were sent his way and only one got past him.
- The power play once again got a goal on the board. But the penalty kill was also effective. In 4:59 of short-handed play, the Kraken allowed just five unblocked shot attempts. The Kings allowed nine in 6:09 of penalty play time.
- If you put all factors in play, according to Money Puck’s “Deserve to Win o’Meter,” the Kraken would have won that game 58.1-percent of the time.
