By Sean Jones: Canelo Alvarez is now off the hook of needing to face his conqueror Dmitry Bivol in a rematch after the WBA light heavyweight champion made it known that he’s not interested in fighting him again.
Bivol is essentially saving Canelo’s career by saying he’s not interested in fighting him again because we know what would happen if they fought a rematch. Dmitry would school Canelo from A to B and make him look bad once again.
It’s questionable whether Canelo even wants a rematch with Bivol after the way that he was dominated last May in a fight that was much more one-sided than the narrow set of scores handed in by the three judges.
If Canelo didn’t want the rematch with Bivol, he would be jumping for joy after learning that he didn’t wish to fight him again.
Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs) is one of those Satchel Paige-type individuals who don’t like looking backwards.
He’d rather take his career and his life forwards to accomplish new achievements, such as becoming the undisputed light heavyweight champion by defeating IBF/WBC/WBO 175-lb champion Artur Beterbiev.
Fight Canelo again wouldn’t be sporting for Bivol because it was too easy last time. Bivol admitted yesterday that Canelo wasn’t the toughest fight of his career. Indeed, Bivol appeared to have much harder fights against Craig Richards, Jean Pascal, and Joe Smith Jr.
“He wants a rematch. It’s not a surprise to me because he’s a champion,” said WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol to Fight Hub TV about Canelo Alvarez wanting a rematch against him.
“It’s okay for him that he wants revenge. Of course, the better way for me is to move forward, move up. We can talk about a rematch, but it’s not interesting to me like it was before.”
There it is. Bivol saving Canelo’s career by saying he’s not interested in a rematch.
For DAZN, that can’t be pleased learning that Bivol doesn’t wish to fight Canelo again because there are only a tiny handful of fights out there that are worthy of the huge purses the Mexican star has been hauling in for the network. It’s unlikely that he’s willing to take those fights.
If DAZN is going to keep Canelo around, they need to stick his feet in the fire and force him to fight David Benavidez two or three times in a row.
