Guyana and Suriname golfers shared the honours in the 1998 two-day LSG golf classic at the Lusignan course with Guyanese Vijay Deo and Basil Sookram showing top form among the men and Surinamese Lillian Hermelijn along with Guyanese Joan Fields winning convincingly in the women’s category.
Pre- tournament favorite Vijay Deo narrowly lost to Basil Sookram in the men’s championship category, with both players scoring a total of 60 points but Sookram came out victorious after having a better second day score. Vijay Deo nipped past A. Moenoe of Suriname and Maurice Solomon in the Net Category with all three competitors ending on 69 points. In the men’s first flight the Guyanese headed the leaderboard with Andy Gouveia’s 41 points taking top honors from Patrick Prashad’s points and Basheer Khan’s 34 Points.
