By Brian Webber: Tim Tszyu says he’s ready to shock the world by beating undisputed junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo on January 28th.
#1 WBO Tszyu (21-0, 15 KOs) doesn’t mind that boxing fans and media members are doubting his ability to defeat the four-belt champion Charlo (35-1-1, 19 KOs).
Obviously, Tszyu, 27, must fight a lot better than he did in his last contest against Terrell Gausha last March in Minneapolis.
Tszyu was surprisingly dropped in the first round by Gausha and struggled to win a narrow 12 round unanimous decision by the scores 114-113, 116-111, and 115-112.
It’s disappointing that Tszyu had so many problems beating Gausha because this is someone that Jermell would likely have destroyed with no problems.
Tszyu must focus on his defense to keep from getting hit by Charlo because he’s too wide open. He doesn’t move his head, and he walks into punches a lot of the time.
Ideally, Tszyu could use more experience before taking on Charlo, but he’s not going to get the opportunity. If he could face some of these contenders, it would give him seasoning before challenging Jermell for his four belts:
- Sebastian Fundora
- Israil Madrimov
- Erickson Lubin
- Tony Harrison
- Danny Garcia
- Brian Castano
- Charles Conwell
“I’m not concerned about him. I’m focusing on myself,” said Tim Tszyu to Fight Hub TV when asked about Jermell Charlo. “I just want to be the best version of myself. I couldn’t care less what Jermell is going.
“I’m not just taking on a world champion. I’m taking on the very best in the division, and that’s what I want. I want to set those goals up so high and keep chasing them.
“That’s my goal,” said Tszyu when asked if he plans on moving up in weight. “Right now, all I’m thinking about is the undisputed junior middleweight championship, but eventually, going up in weight.
“It’s a lot of sacrifice being away from my loved ones, but it’ll all be worth it in the end,” said Tszyu about his soon traveling to the U.S to begin training for his January 28th fight against Jermell Charlo.
“Four belts, it doesn’t get any better. A big step in the direction I want to go,” said Tszyu about what it would mean for him to defeat Charlo. “It’s not the end of the journey.
“My dad is a super busy man, but he’ll be there for the fight. That’s exactly when I want him there for the fight.
“No disrespect to anyone but my IQ,” said Tszyu when asked what he brings to the Charlo fight that other fighters haven’t. “I’m going to bring the best version of myself and be the best I can possibly be.
“If people think you’re not going to do it, prove them all wrong. It really depends on where the big fights are. That’s what I’m chasing,” said Tszyu when asked how long he plans on staying at 154.
“I’m just going to be interested in big fights against the big names, something where you wake up in the morning, and it’s worth living for. Life is about the thrill, the journey, and the process of it. That’s what I’m going through it.
