GRANVILLE, Ohio (October 29, 2022) – An early penalty kick goal by Dulcie Heyes was enough to send Denison University women’s soccer past the College of Wooster, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Barclay-Thomsen Field. With the win, the Big Red clinch a spot in next week’s North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Big Red entered the match against the Fighting Scots needing a win or a tie to advance to the postseason, and they came out firing with four shots in the first nine-plus minutes before being award a penalty kick just nine minutes and 44 seconds into the match. On the penalty kick, Heyes deposited it into the bottom right of the goal to make it 1-0.
Despite outshooting Wooster 15-3 in the first half, the Big Red were unable to add to their lead, and then the second half was even with both teams putting up six total shots and four shots on goal.
Wooster’s best chance to get onto the scoreboard came in the 54th minute when back-to-back shots by the Fighting Scots were blocked, leading to a great look on a third shot attempt before a great diving save by Wynne Hague.
Then in the 69th minute, another good opportunity to score for Wooster saw Hague make the stop on a shot from outside the box. In the end, Hague tied her career-high with six saves while recording her third shutout of the season.
Meanwhile, the Big Red were led in shots by Caroline Garrard with five while Leland Keller added three.
With the win, Denison improves to 5-8-4 overall and 4-1-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. With 14 total points, the Big Red will enter the NCAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will begin tournament play on Wednesday, November 2, when they travel to Gambier, Ohio to take on No. 1-seeded Kenyon College. The match is set to start at 2:30 p.m.
