PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women’s tennis closed out play in the Brown Quad with seven wins over Harvard on Sunday (Oct. 30).
“This weekend was a testament of the hard work and commitment to getting better our team has embodied this fall,” said head coach Lucie Schmidhauser. “It is good to see that focusing on the process of getting better and challenging each other every day in practice is already showing in outcome results. I was really proud of our team for competing hard the entire weekend. I can honestly say there was not one match our players didn’t give their full effort or didn’t try to problem-solve when things were not going their way. That is what championship teams do and we were able to accomplish it this weekend.”
Brown earned two wins in doubles play, both 6-3 wins. Addison Ahlstrom and Britany Lau teamed for a win at No. 1 doubles and Alexandra Benedetto and Lindsey Hofflander won at No. 3 doubles.
“Our doubles play continues to develop and our players played aggressively and fearlessly,” said Schmidhauser. “Addie Ahlstrom and Britany Lau dominated their competition at line one doubles and I am pleased with their improvement trajectory as a team. Our team has spend a lot of time working on doubles this fall and it is fun seeing them use the new skills they have learned.”
Lau earned another singles win with a 7-6, 7-5 win at No. 1. Olivia Mariotti picked up a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 4 and Hofflander won 7-6, 6-1 at No. 7. The other two Brown wins both came in three sets. Ahlstrom earned a 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5 and Nora Lee won 6-0, 6-7, 7-6 at No. 6
“In singles, Britany continues to provide tremendous leadership at line one. She won all of her matches in tightly contested battles, but her ability to problem-solve, willingness to be uncomfortable and wait for the right ball to attack is inspiring to me and our team,” said Schmidhauser. “Addie Ahlstrom also had a great weekend going undefeated in single and doubles. Addie has committed to improving certain parts of her game that were a liability for her earlier in the fall and she continues to be relentless in sticking to her performance goals. Vivian Miller competed extremely well at line 3 singles as a freshman. She competed with poise and confidence rarely seen from a freshman. Olivia Mariotti’s trajectory as a competitor has been fun to witness. Olivia had two great singles wins this weekend and her it is so much fun watching her compete with so much determination and grit.”
