NEWS & NOTES:
Last Time Out: Without Sebastian Aho and Jesper Fast, the Canes put together arguably their best performance of the season Saturday on Long Island. The unit held the Islanders to a total of just 16 shots, all of which were turned aside by Pyotr Kochetkov for his second shutout of the season. As the 23-year-old rookie held down the fort, impromptu first line center Paul Stastny earned his first goal of the season and had his offense supplemented by Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Jordan Staal in the third.

Quality Koochie: Pyotr Kochetkov has now played in all five games of the team’s current road trip, accumulating a record of 4-0-1 along the way. Totaling a .926 save percentage (SV%), he is also now the only goalie in the NHL with multiple shutouts over the last calendar month. The Canes have also earned at least one point in the standings in 10 of Kochetkov’s 11 appearances this season.
11-7: Take Two?: Neither Sebastian Aho nor Jesper Fast practiced Monday afternoon in Raleigh and following Rod Brind’Amour said that the team would “probably” be going with 11 forwards and seven defenseman for a second consecutive game. Maxime Lajoie, recalled Thursday from Chicago (AHL) served as the seventh defensemen for the contest in New York, playing just under six total minutes.
Stastny’s Big Role: With Aho out of the lineup, veteran Paul Stastny stepped into his top line role. Centering Martin Necas and Seth Jarvis, Stastny scored his first goal of the season Saturday night. #26 played 14:39 in the affair, his highest time on ice since the team’s third game of the season, October 17 in Seattle.
Road Warriors: The Canes enter tonight having earned at least one point in their last nine road games. They are 5-0-4 dating back to November 14, tying the second-longest streak in franchise history. The current run now only trails the streak of points in 12 consecutive road games from 2004.
No Morning Skate: For the third time in the last four games the Canes will not skate to start the day. Rod Brind’Amour will meet with the media at 4:45 p.m. pre-game and the team’s projected lineup article will follow shortly after.
On The Other Side: The Red Wings return home tonight after playing four road games last week. They dropped their two most recent contests and are 0-2-1 in their last three at home. Captain Dylan Larkin leads the way with 27 points in 27 games. Former Hurricanes netminder Alex Nedeljkovic is 2-4-2 with a 4.09 goals against average (GAA) and an .880 save percentage (SV%).
CANES INJURY UPDATES
- Forward Sebastian Aho has not skated with the team since last Tuesday’s contest (12/6) in Anaheim. Rod Brind’Amour said he would miss Saturday’s contest on Long Island due to a lower-body injury that has “been bothering him for a bit.”
- Forward Jesper Fast (lower-body injury) has also not skated with the team since December 6. Like Aho, he missed Saturday’s game against the Islanders and did not practice Monday either.
- Forward Ondrej Kase has been in concussion protocol since October 13. He has recently been skating with Max Pacioretty before the team’s practices. There is currently no timetable for his return.
- Goaltender Frederik Andersen suffered a lower-body injury on November 6. He returned to practice with the team twice last week, but did not skate with the unit Monday. There is no set timetable for his return.
- Forward Max Pacioretty suffered a torn Achilles tendon in August. He has been skating in recent weeks but has yet to take part in a full-team practice. Don Waddell said earlier this season that he hopes to have Pacioretty available at some point in either January or February.
