By Craig Daly: Demetrius Andrade is sending a message to Jermall Charlo that he only wants him next after he takes care of his stay-busy fight against Demond Nicholson on January 7th at the Capitol One Arena in Washington, D.C.
Andrade (31-0, 19 KOs) is hoping that Charlo will want to finally face him now that the two are on the same network on Showtime. In the past, the former two-division world champion Demetrius has had no luck getting Jermall to agree to fight him.
Now that Charlo is getting up there in age at 32, he’s going to have to fight Andrade if he wants to get the bigger fights against the likes of Canelo Alvarez.
Demetrius is facing Nicholson (26-4-1, 22 KOs) in a 10 round bout in the first fight of the televised portion of Showtime PPV on the Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis vs. Hector Luis Garcia card on January 7th.
“Making 160 has become tough. I’ve been doing 154 for years and 160 for a few years now,” said Demetrius Andrade to PBC Podcast about why he decided to move up to 168.
“Of course, I want Canelo; of course, I want GGG, and of course, I wanted Billy Joe. But in today’s market, Charlo, that’s it. Thst’s the only name I’m campaigning for.
“Two or three, I don’t know. People get hurt, and things happen,” said Andrade when asked who is his top three fighters that he wants to fight. Charlo and me have history. Like I said before, if Plant and Benavidez can come to terms and make it happen with them disliking and bring it to the ring and make it happen with their pockets and their bank, then we can do the same thing. I’m just saying.
“I don’t want to hear no one else. Charlo says, ‘I want Chris Eubank.’ No, it’s you and me. That’s it, let’s make this fight happen.
“Of course, I’m not getting any younger. Time goes by fast,” said Demetrius when asked if there’s a sense of urgency to make the big fights happen.
“Who am I fighting? The Janibek guy? When I should be fighting the Charlos. Moving up to 168, there are a lot more fighters that are willing to fight because they feel they’re going to be bigger & stronger. This is the route that I’m taking, the risky route, of course.
“I think it’s being avoided because when you’re both on the same network, same promoter [Matchroom Boxing], and the same head honcho at DAZN.
“I did my part to try and make the best fights happen for myself. It seemed like they weren’t doing it, and their target point was Charlo at Showtime to try and do this thing. That wasn’t going to work.
“Now that I’m free, I’m making it work myself. I got paid, I was active, and I was busy. I’m 31-0 with 19 knockouts; what is there to regret?
“Maybe it would have helped me to get in the ring with GGG. Maybe it would have helped get in with Jaime Munguia,” said Andrade when asked if his career would have been helped if the fight with Billy Joe Saunders had happened in 2019.
“Billy Joe, I would have beat him up, trashed him, and sent him home, and he would have never gotten any of that stuff. It’s a good thing that didn’t happen because I do like the kid, and I’m glad he got the Canelo fight to take care of him and his family.
“You saw what came out of that? He’s fat, he’s like this and out of shape. I’m professional; I’m 100. That s**t would never.
“I believe they [at Showtime] can push to make the big fights happen versus wherever else I was. Of course, I’d like to stay like Tom Brady and do my Patriots thing for as long as I can [with PBC].
“I’d like to stay with Showtime for as long as I can, but if things don’t escalate, of course, I have to move around. I know it’s better to stay than hop around like a bunny,” said Andrade.
