Georgia football did not sign a quarterback in its 2023 recruiting class, and head coach Kirby Smart addressed that issue during his press conference. Georgia is preparing for the departure of starter Stetson Bennett at the end of the season but has former five-star Brock Vandagriff and former four-star Carson Beck on the roster.
“I think it’s irrelevant in today’s day and age,” Smart said, via Dawgs247. “The portal is full of them. There’s going to be multiple guys in every year. You want to do the best job you can to get the best quarterback you can. When you have three quarterbacks, sometimes you don’t have any. And when you have one quarterback, that’s when you have a quarterback. We’re very pleased with what we have in our quarterback room. We think we’ve got three quarterbacks that are going to be really good, so the concern wasn’t about a quarterback.
“And none of the skill players made it about that because they know what we’ve signed the last really three or four years. They know what we have the potential to sign in ’24. So it’s one of those deals that the quarterback position kind of sells it based on who your offensive coordinator is and how your offense does, and we’ve excelled in that.”
While Vandagriff was the higher-rated recruit, Beck got more action this season during blowouts. Beck got to Athens in 2020. This year he completed 24-of-32 passes (75.0%) for 270 yards and four touchdowns. Vandagriff, meanwhile, attempted just two passes on the season.
“Carson’s done a good job. He’s playing with a lot of confidence,” Smart said of Beck in September, via Dawgs247. “He understands our system. He’s another year of being in the system. And you remember, there’s a point in time where he probably had more reps than Stetson did in terms of volume of work because he took a lot of reps as the two when Stetson took some as the three. So he’s got a lot of work.
“He’s intelligent. He understands what the defense is doing. He understands his protections. He knows where to go with the ball. He’s accurate. He’s done a nice job with the opportunity he’s been given.”

Out of Jacksonville’s Mandarin High, Beck was the No. 234 player and No. 5 pro-style quarterback from the Class of 2020. Vandagriff came out of Bogart (Ga.) Prince Avenue Christian School and just missed out on five-star status as the No. 34 player and No. 5 quarterback from the Class of 2021.
