A $25,000 sponsorship from the bank was confirmed when three members of the board, and the new manager, attended an official announcement of the support.
In less than a decade the bank has contributed more than $400,000 to the town and its surrounds, the latest donation the largest in its nine-year history.
Kyabram’s Community Bank steering committee was formed in 2013, chaired by businessman Vince Curtis.
Parkland president Greg Ryan said the completed project would be an amazing community asset.
“It will be a high-end, but affordable, facility for the community to use. Things like weddings, parties and funeral services,” he said.
“Contributions like this from the community bank will allow us to finish the project.”
The Parkland project started in December 2020, following Federal Government funding support, but the goalposts moved significantly with a sharp increase in material costs.
Mr Ryan said the club was considering its options, even the possibility of “cutting the project short’’ due to the increased costs.
He said the bank board had recognised the magnitude of the problem and acted accordingly.
Nexhip Australian captain
Dylan Nexhip’s love of netball began watching his mum Glenys play for Tongala, and that dedication saw the former Blues A-grade coach lead Australia into the 2022-23 international men’s netball season.
Nexhip received the tap on the shoulder from the Australian Men’s and Mixed Netball Association, saying it was an honour to lead his country.
Nexhip led Australia’s campaign in New Zealand with a curtain-raiser on October 12 to the Diamonds and Silver Ferns Trans-Tasman Series opener.
The two nations will then face off at John Cain Arena in Melbourne on October 19 before welcoming England on October 30.
More than you can imagine
A new slogan promoting Kyabram as a key Campaspe tourist destination is expected to be launched in tandem with a new logo and website to lift the profile of shire’s often “forgotten town’’.
“Kyabram: more than you imagine” is the catchy phrase that will most likely be adopted as the base on which the Kyabram Tomorrow organisation, in tandem with the Chamber of Commerce, re-invigorates the profile of the town.
The final decision on the logo has not yet been made by the development and business community leaders, while final touches are now being made to the development of the website.
All three new additions to the town’s promotional material are expected to be locked in some time during September, well before the flagship promotional event of Kyabram Tomorrow — its Tastes and Tunes festival.
In spite of debate currently doing the rounds there is no plan to have a sportsperson, or any individual, on the signage entering the town.
Cupido kicks Kangaroo ton
Damian Cupido became the first Girgarre Football Club player to kick 100 goals in a season at Longwood Recreation Reserve on Sunday and, in doing so, helped the Kangaroos end a 21-year finals drought.
Girgarre will contest its first Kyabram District Football League finals series since 2001 when it faces Shepparton against — ironically at Longwood — in the first elimination final on Saturday (August 20).
In horse racing terms Cupido, and his Girgarre teammates, were greeted by a Heavy 10 when they arrived for the final home-and-away round of the Kyabram District League season on Saturday.
They needed only a win — after eighth-placed Merrigum had lost to Murchison-Toolamba only 24 hours earlier — to qualify for the finals, but to complete a unique quinella Cupido needed 13 goals to finish the regular season with 100 goals.
Drizzling rain flowed for much of the afternoon and mud piles developed at both ends of the ground, but the elements did not prevent the 40-year-old from dominating the match.
He had 22 scoring shots, along with a couple of attempts that either went wide of the goals or fell short.
He kicked 14.8 for the afternoon, bring his tally to 101 for the season — from 15 games (an average of almost seven a game).
Cupido kicked four goals in the opening term, three in the second, four in the third and three in the last term, his 100th goal coming after a strong chest mark from 30 metres directly in front of goal.
College national finalist
Kyabram P-12 College was the only public school to be named among the eight finalists of the Australian Education Awards’ Regional School of the Year award, presented at a Sydney gala event.
Student satisfaction at the school is at an all-time high and a multi-million dollar build at the school will provide a launching pad for the college into the future.
The nomination is on the back of a student survey that returned a 90 per cent-plus satisfaction response to the college’s operation.
Results of the ‘Attitudes to School Survey’ conducted by the college were described as “through the roof’’ by administrators.
A multi-million dollar redevelopment at the college is under way to develop a new administration building, which will include a wellbeing centre.
Campaspe’s People Matter Survey
Campaspe Shire’s People Matter Survey has uncovered a sexual harassment issue that has resulted in a consultant being engaged to conduct focus group sessions.
Ten per cent of respondents to the shire’s People Matter Survey indicated they had experienced sexual harassment in the workplace in the 12 months prior to the survey results being released.
The focus groups were not specifically designed to address sexual harassment, but the survey results as a whole.
A report delivering results from the survey was delivered to the July meeting of council, showing that half of those “sexually harassed’’ staff members attempted to ”laugh off’’ the actions.
The second most common response to the harassment was to “pretend it didn’t bother them’’, with none asking to take time off work or request a transfer.
Only 13 per cent of the survey respondents told their manager, double that amount told family and friends, while several chose to avoid areas of the building that opened them up to the behaviour.
Only 30 per cent of Campaspe Shire’s 510 employees chose to take up the opportunity of responding to the survey, which took the form of a five-category questionnaire based on the council’s Gender Equality Action Plan.
