Once again it was a fifth set that prevented Jannik Sinner from pulling off a great feat in a Grand Slam tournament. After Wimbledon in the direct confrontation with Novak Djokovic and at the Us Open against the then winner Carlos Alcaraz, history repeated itself also at the 2023 edition of the Australian Open.
The Italian recovered two sets behind Stefanos Tsitsipas, who however managed to react and win, thus conquering the quarterfinals in Melbourne. On the hard-fought match, which divided fans quite a bit about the Italian player’s performance on the court, Paolo Bertolucci decided to give his personal opinion on the pages of the Gazzetta dello Sport.
The former Italian tennis legend immediately underlined: “Unlike last year, when our Italian didn’t never entered the heart of the challenge and had no chance to counter his rival, this last match turned out to be a real match.” The commentator for Sky Sport then added in the interview: “Once again it ended badly for the Italian, who has few regrets.
Having stood up to one of the best tennis players on the circuit for four hours certifies, without shadow of a doubt, the progress made by Sinner in recent months.”
Bertolucci defends Sinner
Bertolucci thus defended the athlete trained by coach Simone Vagnozzi and Darren Cahill from criticism: “Sinner has shown progress, the gap compared to the best players is reduced.
Some technical-tactical details are missing (flying solutions and alternative plans depending on the moment and the opponent) to complete his level of play, but it is undeniable that the gap that divided him in 2022 from the Greek has decreased and not a little.
This is what counts.” About a week now available to the Italian before taking the field again for a new tournament on the ATP Tour: Jannik will in fact be the protagonist in Montpellier from 6 to 12 February, with the aim to confirm the progress shown in Australia.
Now, despite the good match played, Sinner should made the leap of quality in this season, after the problems showed in 2022. The Italian needs to to get a good achievement, also becuse his rival Carlos Alcaraz seems to far from his level, at the moment.
