Emergency services were called after witnesses reported seeing a body in the water. They attempted to resuscitate him but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police patrols and an air ambulance were dispatched to the lake in Walton Hall Park at 8.58am.
A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said that “enquiries are ongoing.”
A police cordon remains in place for the surrounding area, as officers attempt to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
The air ambulance has left the scene.
Police are examining CCTV footage of the nearby area in order to assist their inquiries.
They are also urging anyone with details about what happened to contact officers by calling 101 or via Twitter (@MerPolCC).
Merseyside Police said: “Emergency services were contacted at just before 9am following reports that the body of a male had been discovered in the lake.
“The male was removed and CPR commenced but he was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene.
“Enquiries are ongoing to identify the man and notify his next of kin.”
