SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Coming off its best season in a decade, Cal Poly Women’s Tennis, 14-3 overall in 2021, begins its 2022 season Friday in Berkeley. In 2021, the team finished runner-up in the Big West Conference Tournament. Following its season, they were ranked No. 62 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
The Mustangs will begin their 2022 season Friday at the University of California, Berkeley. The tournament will run through Sunday.
The Mustangs have five returning players including Emily Ackerman, Kim Bhunu, Delanie Dunkle, Melissa LaMette, and Shreya Ravilla. In the 2021 season, Ackerman was awarded Honorable Mention All-Conference in singles and First Team All-Conference in doubles. Bhunu was named Second Team All-Conference in singles and First-Team All-Conference in doubles. LaMette was awarded Second Team All-Conference in both singles and doubles. In doubles, Dunkle earned Second Team-Conference honors.
For the 2022 season, the team welcomes four new players- three freshmen and a transfer student. Eliza Bates, from Lafayette, California, won league championships in 2017, 2018, and 2019, and even went undefeated in singles as a senior. Misha Berry, a Bellaire Texas native, whose brother Noah is a sophomore on the men’s tennis team, won the Texas singles championship. From Arroyo Grande, California, Peyton Dunkle, joins her sister Delanie. Peyton played at Arroyo Grande High School, winning three league championships and going undefeated in league singles games during her junior year. The team’s sole graduate student Laura Bente of Hannover, Germany, transferred from the University of Memphis, where in 2019 she was named an AAC All-Conference selection.
The Mustangs are scheduled to play nineteen games and two tournaments in the 2022 regular season.
