MARICOPA, Ariz. – Despite entering the day with a slim advantage in points in the match play event, Arizona Men’s Golf dropped the Copper Cup to Arizona State as play was concluded just before darkness. Monday’s afternoon session of single match play was a back-and-forth affair as the Wildcats’ last round of play was highlighted by freshman Jackson Norwich’s convincing 14-hole win in his indvidual match at Ak Chin Southern Dunes Golf Course.
“Today was not the ending to this event that we wanted, but these two days of match play were a high-level learning experience for us,” said head coach Jim Anderson. “We carded some strong scores yesterday and in the morning session but weren’t able to carry that momentum all the way to the end. I look forward to seeing our guys return to the course and compete at the Arizona Intercollegiate next week.”
Arizona earned one point in Monday morning’s foursome competition behind the strong play of the pairing of Cal McCoy and Sam Sommerhauser.
The Copper Cup is the second annual Ryder Cup-style event between the two programs, and it was Arizona’s first official competition of the new year. The Cats will return to action on Monday, Jan. 24 when they host the Arizona Intercollegiate at Tucson Country Club and look to win their home tournament for a fifth consecutive year.
