ORLANDO – The University of Pennsylvania women’s tennis team opened the 2022 spring season in the Sunshine State. Penn meet UCF for a midday match at the USTA National Campus. The Quakers battled hard but ultimately lost the match 4-3.
The Knights jumped out to an early lead in the team score taking the doubles point with wins on court two and three. UCF opened singles action taking three straight points on courts six, five, and three to claim the match. Penn would earn victories on courts two, one and four in singles action but it was not enough as UCF had already won the match.
Iuliia Bryzgalova, Sabine Rutlauka, and Gavriella Smith all picked up victories. Bryzgalova won in straight sets, 7-5 and 6-2. Rutlauka won the first set 6-4 and then won the tie-breaker in the second set (7-6 (7-4)) for her first win of the spring season. Smith dropped the first set 1-6 but battled her way back in the second set winning the tie-breaker (7-6(7-5). She would claim the final set 10-3 for the match point.
The match started outdoors and then the weather came rolling in and forced a venue change. The delay in action took about 45 minutes, pausing singles action and forced a move indoors to complete the match.
