The Money Team Racing appear to be on the cusp of announcing their NASCAR Cup Seres debut, noting that “the wait is almost over”.
For the last few years, The Money Team Racing, the aspiring NASCAR Cup Series team associated with legendary boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr., have been rumored to make their Cup Series debut.
Yet so far, that debut hasn’t happened. Every time they appear to be on the verge of making a formal announcement, that formal announcement never comes, and the Cup Series rolls on without them.
But could the 2022 season be different?
Could we finally see the Mayweather team debut in the season-opening Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway?
A recent report from Sports Business Journal’s Adam Stern indicated that the team had secured a car and a sponsor for this race, and that they had signed Kaz Grala as the driver of their car, presumably the #50 Chevrolet.
Grala tested a Next Gen car for StarCom Racing at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval back in October, but StarCom Racing have since shut down. Yet they recently posted a cryptic “Coming Soon” message on Twitter, and the belief is that The Money Team Racing purchased their car.
Now The Money Team Racing have posted a picture and claimed that “the wait is almost over!”, hinting at a Cup Series car reveal in the coming days.
If the #50 Chevrolet is confirmed for Grala, it would make it the 41st confirmed entry for the 200-lap race around the four-turn, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) high-banked oval in Daytona Beach, Florida, as MBM Motorsports are set to run two cars, not just one.
It would also become the fifth confirmed non-chartered entry for the race. With the 36 chartered entries locked into the field and the field capped at 40 cars, this would mean that not all of the cars on the entry list will end up actually qualifying for the “Great American Race” via the single-car qualifying session or the Bluegreen Vacations Duels.
And what a disappointment it would be if, after several years of hype, The Money Team Racing finally confirm their Cup Series debut, only to end up missing the race.
Fox Sports 1 is set to broadcast the Bluegreen Vacations Duels live from Daytona International Speedway beginning at 7:00 p.m. ET on Thursday, February 17. Fox is set to broadcast the 64th annual Daytona 500 live beginning at 2:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, February 20. If you have not yet begun your free trial of FuboTV, the next few weeks would be a great time to do so!
