By Sean Jones: Jermall Charlo would be the easiest for Canelo Alvarez to defeat in comparison to Gennadiy Golovkin and Dmitry Bivol, according to promoter Eddie Hearn.
The reality is, Canelo (57-1-2, 39 KOs) would be at great risk of losing to all three of the fighters that Hearn is talking about for his next fight. Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) would be just as problematic for Canelo than Bivol and GGG, and maybe more so because he’s a boxer/puncher.
Canelo and his trainer Eddy Reynoso haven’t decided who their next opponent will be for May 7th, but Hearn is openly campaigning for one of his fights, Golovkin or Biviol, to get the fight against the Mexican star next.
Hearn recently offered the 31-year-old Canelo a two-fight deal for him to face WBA light heavyweight champion Bivol (19-0, 11 KOs) on May 7th, and Golovkin on September 17th.
It’s questionable whether Canelo will accept the offer from Hearn, considering his trainer/manager Reynoso was heavily praising Jermall last week and saying nothing about a fight with Bivol.
The technical ability and size of the Russian Bivol might make him too risky for the short-legged Canelo, as the Mexican is slow on his feet. Canelo’s movement is similar to gym-mate former heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr.
Hearn: Bivol a tough fight for Canelo
They both stalk their opponents slowly but struggle when facing opposition that has any kind of mobility.
“I think Bivol is a very tough fight [for Canelo]. He’s a light heavyweight. Yeah, tricky,” said Hearn to Fighthype when asked if Dmitry Bivol is a tougher fight for Canelo Alvarez than Jermall Charlo.
“I see the Golovkin fight as being the much more brutal fight than Charlo fight [for Canelo], and I see the Bivol fight as the more technically tricky fight than Charlo, but Charlo is also a great fighter. So each fight brings different challenges.
“I think Charlo is the easiest fight of the three. Yeah,” Hearn said when asked if the Bivol and Golovkin fights are still available to Canelo if he chooses to face Jermall next.
Charlo would be a REALLY hard fight for Canelo, and the chances he would beat him. Unfortunately, Sean Jones is predicting that Canelo and Reynoso will choose not to fight Jermall because he’s got too much talent in comparison to the guys he’s been facing lately from Britain.
“I think what Canelo does is he sort of makes his decision with [trainer/manager] Eddy Reynoso, and after that, he’ll make another decision.
“So right now, he’s got to choose from what’s on the table. Working with Canelo is unquestionably right up there with the best moments of my career,” said Hearn. “Fan base, the passion, him as a fighter. So I’m desperate to work with him again and hopefully, we can make it happen.
Matchroom unlikely to sign Terence Crawford
“The problem is, who can we deliver for him?” said Hearn when asked if he’s considering signing WBO welterweight champion Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford to his Matchroom Boxing stable to have him fight on DAZN.
“He’s going to want a lot of money. By the way, I think he’s pound-for-pound top three, but who can I go to him with for a fight that is going to generate that kind of money? I don’t know,” said Hearn on the likelihood that he wouldn’t have the name fighters to match against Crawford if he signed the 34-year-old former Top Rank boxer.
Unless Hearn was willing to let Crawford fight Conor Benn Matchroom stable, there would be no one for him to compete against if he inked with them. Hearn won’t be able to put together fights between Crawford and Errol Spence Jr or Yordenis Ugas.
