CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Last week, it was three matches in three days for Illinois State as the Redbirds came away with three sweeps over the competition. This week, a lone match with in-state foe Illinois awaits the Redbirds on Sunday with first serve set for Noon at the Atkins Tennis Center.
“We got a lot of tennis in last weekend and our doubles game is progressing well,” ISU head coach Maja Kovacek said. “I’m really excited for us to get out there and take our shot on Sunday against the Illini.”
Three wins in as many days last weekend moved the Redbirds’ spring record to 4-1 overall and helped a pair of standouts earn Missouri Valley Conference weekly honors. No. 1 singles player Tijana Zlatanovic was named the MVC Player of the Week after winning all three of her matches and she was also honored as part of the MVC Doubles Team of the Week along with partner Tara Damnjanovic. That team was the No. 1 doubles team in the MVC last season and looks to be back at the top of their game heading into the month of February.
Illinois is off to a 4-3 start to the spring, following a pair of losses last weekend at the ITA Kickoff against No. 18 Florida State and FIU. Prior to that, the Illini had won three-straight matches and they are 3-0 on their home court.
