NORMAN — Junior Alex Martinez has been named Big 12 Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Martinez finished the Sooners’ pair of matches 4-0, tallying two doubles and two singles wins, including a ranked win in singles play.
In No. 22 Oklahoma’s 6-1 victory against Wichita State in Norman, Martinez and doubles partner Welsh Hotard began the Sooners’ momentum with a 6-4 victory against Luka Mrsic and Nicolas Acevedo on court one. In singles play, Martinez was the first Sooner to strike, defeating Orel Ovit 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot.
Against Arkansas, who received votes in the latest ITA poll, Martinez and Hotard struck first again for the Sooners in doubles play, earning a 6-3 win against Alex Reco and Nico Rousset on court one. The junior went on to defeat No. 25 Aleksa Bucan 6-3, 6-2 on court two en route to the team’s 5-2 win against the Razorbacks in Norman. Martinez’s top-25 win was his second ranked win of the season and the highest singles ranked win of his career.
Martinez’s award is the first weekly honor of his career and the first for the Sooners this season.
