Van Rooyen competed for the University of Minnesota from 2009 through 2013. The South Africa native finished his career with a career stroke average of 73.51, which ranks eighth in the Gophers’ career records book. He led the team in stroke average as a junior (72.45) and senior (73.05). Van Rooyen qualified for three-straight NCAA Regionals (T51st in 2011, T19th in 2012, T5th in 2013) and had three-consecutive top-10 finishes at the Big Ten Championships to finish his B1G career (4th in 2011, 7th in 2012, 2nd in 2013).
Turning professional in 2013, van Rooyen competed on the Sunshine Tour. In early 2017, he earned his first win of the tour at the Eye of Africa PGA Championship. He continued to play on the 2017 Challenge Tour where he recorded his second professional win at the Hainan Open. A tie for third at the NBO Golf Classic Grand Final allowed van Rooyen to earn a card for the 2018 European Tour season. He won his first European Tour title at the Scandinavian Invitational at Hills Golf & Sports Club in Sweden in 2019.
In August 2020, van Rooyen was granted Special Temporary Membership until the end of the 2019-20 PGA Tour season with a T20 finish at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. One year later in August 2021, van Rooyen won his first PGA Tour event at the Barracuda Championship.
